What to Expect from your Vehicle Insurance
Make sure your car, boat or van is running smoothly by obtaining the best vehicle insurance you can afford. Vehicle insurance covers basically any thing remotely mobile - cars, taxis, boats, jet skies, trucks, vans and many more.
The cost of insurance are determined according to the type of vehicle, the make and model, where the car is kept, the age of the driver and the driver's history. This will also establish the excess amount paid by the insured in the case of a claim. Due to all these criteria, premiums vary between individuals.
Because of the rising taxi-industry in South Africa, taxi insurance became a popular form of vehicle insurance. Special insurance are available that covers passenger liability and provides cover in case of a personal accident.
When travelling abroad in a rented car, it is advisable to be covered against accidents and theft. Some insurance policies don't cover certain countries. Check with your insurer whether the country you want to explore is covered to prevent private costs.
There are three types of vehicle insurance available: Third Party Only, Third Party Fire and Theft and Comprehensive insurance.
Third Party Only cover includes "liability for injuries to other people, liability for damage to other people's property, liability of passengers for accidents caused by them, and liability arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the car". Third Party Fire and Theft includes all this as well as damage due to fire and theft. Comprehensive is, however, the best option. All of the above are covered, plus additional cover that is stipulated by your contract.
